Thanks for joining us Kezia! Tell us about your journey into the Country Music genre.
“My introduction to country music was hearing my Dad sing country songs in his shows. I learnt all about Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Patsy Cline from a very young age.”
You mention that your father has been your biggest inspiration, but what else has inspired your sound? “I loved how Patsy Cline sang. She had such a beautiful voice, her diction was perfect and i loved how much feeling she used to put into her songs. She drew the listener in and you believed every word she sang.”
Passion and storytelling are key parts of country music that still carry through in the genre today. What excites you about the evolution of country music in the UK? “The acceptance! People used to pull a strange face when I used to mention I wrote and sang country music, but now it's kind of cool again, so it definitely leads to more interest in my music.”
What do you do to pass the time when you’re not writing songs and recording music? “I'm really into health and fitness and enjoy working out and getting my steps in every day on long walks.”
And what would you say was a career-defining moment for you? “Touring the UK with The Shires was an incredible experience, not just in terms of enjoyment but it put me in front of thousands of new country fans. A real defining moment was when I opened up for them at The London Palladium. It was a stage I'd always dreamed of playing and it was a super proud moment.”
Are there any artists that you dream about collaborating with? “This changes constantly, but right now id absolutely love to do a duet with Lainey Wilson. Hopefully, she'd also bring her new Wrangler clothing collection so I could borrow her clothes!”
What would you tell your younger self, knowing what you know now? “Definitely to believe in myself more. I have suffered at times from imposter syndrome and can at times question whether I'm good enough. I wish I’d believed in myself more.”
Do you have any advice for someone looking to break into the country music genre? “When it comes to country music, it all starts with the song. You have to have good songs to make waves in any genre, but country music is specifically known for its heartfelt lyrics and catchy melodies. Work at getting the best songs by honing your craft as a songwriter by co-writing, listening to what other artists are releasing, and being authentic to who you are.”
